Mountain won
its first
region
title,
claiming the
team crown
on the final
day of the
Region
5AAAAA girls
track and
field
championships
Tuesday at
Woodstock
High
School's
Wolverine
Den.
The Lady
Mustangs
scored 130
points to
finish ahead
of Marietta
(114.5) and
McEachern
(103.5) and
clinch the
first region
title of the
program's
10-year
history.
"It's
awesome,"
Kennesaw
Mountain
coach Cindy
Faulker
said. "This
was 10 years
in the
making. It
was a great
team
effort."Kennesaw
Mountain
continued
its mastery
of the field
events,
getting wins
from Isana
Osanyindi in
the triple
jump, Daina
Levy in the
shot put and
Brooke
Colson in
the pole
vault. The
Lady
Mustangs
were also
boosted by
an
unexpected
win by
Osanyindi in
the
200-meter
dash. |
Osanyindi
won three
events in
all at the
meet, adding
the triple
jump and 200
dash to the
high jump
title that
she won on
Monday.
Osanyindi
won the
triple jump
with a jump
of 37 feet,
9 inches to
beat out
Etowah's
Leah Hixon
(36-4 ). She
won the 200
with a time
of 26.37
seconds to
place ahead
of
McEachern's
Ashley Gayle
(26.44).
Levy was
another
multiple-event
winner for
Kennesaw
Mountain,
adding the
shot put
title to her
win in the
discus win
from Monday.
Levy won the
shot put
with a throw
of 40-6 ,
finishing
ahead of
teammate
Amber
Hallman
(38-11 ).
Colson
claimed the
pole vault
title with a
vault of
11-6,
beating
North Cobb's
Lauren
Hutchinson
(10-0).
The top two
finishers in
each event
qualify for
the state
meet in
Albany May
6-8.
McEachern's
Amber Brock
and Darnisha
Stevenson
were the
other
multiple-event
winners of
the meet,
with Brock
winning both
the 400 and
300 hurdles
and
Stevenson
the 100 and
100 hurdles.
Brock won
the 400 with
a time of
58.46,
finishing
ahead of
McEachern
teammate
Gayle
(59.44), and
claimed the
300 hurdles
with a time
of 45.06 to
place ahead
of
Marietta's
Kourtney
Keller
(47.06).
Stevenson
won the 100
dash with a
time of
12.53 to
finish ahead
of
Marietta's
Whitney
Stevenson
(12.70) and
was the
winner of
the 100
hurdles with
a time of
15.37, ahead
of
Marietta's
Bre'Anna
Crockett
(15.73).
McEachern
swept the
400 and
1,600
relays,
finishing
ahead of
Marietta in
both races.
The Lady
Indians won
the 400
relay with a
time of
49.18 and
claimed the
1,600 relay
in 3:59.50.
Harrison's
Kaylee
Isaacs and
South Cobb's
Kevyn Tracy
were the
other state
qualifers
with
second-place
finishes in
the 3,200
and 800,
respectively.
Isaacs
finished
second in
the 3,200
(11:54.16)
and Tracy
was
runner-up in
the 800
(2:22.01).
